Why are There No Mercedes Trucks in USA?

The X-Class pickup truck is not being offered in the United States. Although it features 405 pound-feet of torque and a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds, it won’t be available in the United States for the time being. Why is Mercedes not bringing this truck to the United States? It seems that pickups have become one of the most popular segments of vehicles in the U.S. over the past several years.

Although production of the X-Class pickup truck is being discontinued in the United States, its European and global market debuts are planned for this November. The truck is also slated to be launched in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina, and Brazil in 2019. However, Mercedes has not planned to bring this truck to the United States market. This fact may be surprising to some, but Mercedes isn’t offering a full explanation for the decision.

While Mercedes-Benz trucks are a luxury vehicle, the profitability of the US market for new models is questionable. As of June, consumers bought 216,000 mid-size pickups in the US, with an annual increase of 2.4% and a four percent rise in full-size pickups. Kelley Blue Book data indicates the average transaction price for this segment is $32,000 – significantly below the $43,000 Mercedes set as the base price of its X-Class in Germany.

How Much is a Mercedes Truck 2020?

The cost of the 2020 Mercedes X-Class is likely to be higher than the base model of any other midsize pickup. Some upscale trims are expected to cost more than the average transaction price for a full-size pickup. The X-Class’ price could be inflated by the chicken tax, which imposes a 25 percent tariff on light trucks imported from the United States. The price may remain relatively low, however, as Brinley left the door open for a U.S. debut.

The X-Class was officially announced a couple of years ago and is expected to be introduced to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Brazil by the end of 2018. Although the X-Class is not a premium model, it is considered a mid-sized model. It may be based on the Nissan Navara, as both are part of the Daimler-Renault alliance.

Does Mercedes Still Make Pickup Trucks?

Several months ago, we reported that Mercedes-Benz was planning to introduce the X-Class pickup truck concept at an automotive show in South Africa. While the Germans had promised a production version in the future, they did not confirm the pickup’s US availability. A midsize pickup is the most profitable vehicle segment, and Mercedes-Benz could make the best use of its G-Class platform to sell this new model.

The X-Class was announced by Mercedes-Benz in 2015 as a collaboration between the company and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. It was originally intended to be assemble at Nissan plants in Europe and South America. In the United States, however, the X-Class pickup truck was not produced at any plant. It will cease production in Barcelona, Spain, in June, and will no longer be manufactured after 2020.

There are a number of reasons why Mercedes-Benz has discontinued the X-Class. The pickup truck was designed to compete with the Nissan Navara in the global market. While it was a nice option for some buyers, the vehicle was only sold in a few countries and was never intended for the North American market. Regardless of its success in other countries, it is unlikely that Mercedes will ever make pickup trucks in the USA.
