What is an on Highway Truck?

The Class 7 and Class 8 trucks are considered heavy-duty trucks and are regulated by the Federal Highway Administration. Class 7 trucks generally have a GVWR of between 26,001 and 33,000 pounds, and usually have three axles. Class 7 trucks are commonly used in inter-city operations, where they require tight maneuverability.

A Class 8 truck has a much larger GVWR than a Class 7 truck. The maximum GVWR of a Class 8 truck is 80,000 pounds. These vehicles are considered “oversized” by federal regulations. As a result, they need special permits and must travel along specially designated routes.
